Description

The Book of Disquiet is the Portuguese modernist master Fernando Pessoa's greatest literary achievement. An "autobiography" or "diary" containing exquisite melancholy observations, aphorisms, and ruminations, this classic work grapples with all the eternal questions. Now, for the first time the texts are presented chronologically, in a complete English edition by master translator Margaret Jull Costa. Most of the texts in The Book of Disquiet are written under the semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares, an assistant bookkeeper. This existential masterpiece was first published in Portuguese in 1982, forty-seven years after Pessoa's death. A monumental literary event, this exciting, new, complete edition spans Fernando Pessoa's entire writing life.

Pessoa's Disqueting, yet Consoling Book
By: Dian Natalia Sutanto

Pessoa's Livro de Desassossego or The Book of Disquiet is not a book. Well, maybe the appropriate term is an Anti-Literature. This book never exists. Therefore, several versions of this text exists with different arrangements and selections. A very unique text, it's a collection of many potential books. What I love from New Direction edition is that it offers complete version of the text. I enjoy this work very much for its... See More

celebration on the life of the mind. This book explores many interesting issues, such as alienation, absurdity, solitude, the meaning of life, death, love and many other philosophical issues. This book is disquieting, but consoling in the same time. It is consoling because the disquiet feelings we sometimes feel are also felt and expressed sympathetically and poetically by the author. Those who love witty and philosophical aphorisms would love this book!
