Anthony Doerr describes the characters extremely well. Not only that I can feel what they feel, but I can also feel the atmosphere. Bottom line, it's a bit of a complicated fate of two kids live in the same period of war, but the way Anthony writes it just astonishes me beyond anything. If I could give the book more than 5 stars, I would.

this book explores the different sides of war through the eyes of Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French girl who participates in the French Resistance and Werner Pfennig, a conflicted German boy who reluctantly becomes a member of the Wehrmacht. 

my heart is breaking not only for the people who suffered terribly at the hands of the Nazis but also for the youth of Germany and how they suffered too, with all the horrible things inflicted upon them. it reminds us that NO ONE leaves the war unschated, that war changes people. 

it's very powerful and deeply moving, and it totally deserves that Pulitzer Prize.
