Description

Written more than 70 years ago, 1984 was George Orwell's chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984 has come and gone, his dystopian vision of a government that will do anything to control the narrative is timelier than ever...

- Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read -

"The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."

Winston Smith toes the Party line, rewriting history to satisfy the demands of the Ministry of Truth. With each lie he writes, Winston grows to hate the Party that seeks power for its own sake and persecutes those who dare to commit thoughtcrimes. But as he starts to think for himself, Winston can't escape the fact that Big Brother is always watching...

A startling and haunting novel, 1984 creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the novel's hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions--a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

An astounding, very thought-provoking work of art

I got to this book due to my recent interest in the dystopian genre, and I was very well surprised of what awaits me when I started it. 1984 was written by Orwell back in the 1940s, in the era of post Cold-War era – being one of his most notable works as the prophecy of the future – the dystopian era. Orwell eerily projects his prophecy into a very, amazingly detailed world – from the extreme regulation of speech, a constant monitoring of individuals, manipulation of history on regular basis (the party, spearheaded by the dictator ruler called Big Brother, even rewrote the Times newspaper on daily basis in the novel!), to the intricate works of... manipulating people thoughts so that it would be aligned to the party’s ideology, any difference from it and you would be accused of grave crime (coining the term thought-crime  that is used even today.)

Orwell portrayed very well the depth of human manipulation and dictatorship to eerie accuracy. Not stopping at that, Orwell also depicted the what-if world where freedom of expression and basically, freedom of everything was regulated.  Quoting Winston Smith, the protagonist of the novel, “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”

Bottomline is, I would definitely recommend this book to everyone that is eager to try their hands on dystopian genre. Very well recommended.
