Description

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales.

In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin's son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki--son of a giant--blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator.

Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Once, when Thor's hammer is stolen, Thor must disguise himself as a woman--difficult with his beard and huge appetite--to steal it back. More poignant is the tale in which the blood of Kvasir--the most sagacious of gods--is turned into a mead that infuses drinkers with poetry. The work culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and rebirth of a new time and people.

Through Gaiman's deft and witty prose emerge these gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.

Very interesting retelling
By: Rahadiani Prasetianti

Interesting, prosaic retelling of Norse Mythology. Gaiman's writing is very folklore-ish, just like listening to someone telling stories by the camp fire. And the cover is definitely one of most beautiful cover design I've ever seen lately.

Entertaining read!
By: Almeyda Tara

This book consists of 16 short stories, but they all are still connected to each others. If you're not familiar with the gods' names or the terms, you still can search it at the Glossary. But I admitted that this book is a little bit hard to catch up because of the gods and their background stories (they're a lot!). I preferred to devoured every chapters words by words to finally understand it thoroughly. Because the background stories are not entirely explained. Yes, some of the gods (the main ones) had their own background stories, but not the minor gods. ... See More

style="color: rgb(24, 24, 24); font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, serif; font-size: 14px;">Gaiman can retell this mythology into fun and informative reading, and has an adequate amount of humor in it (I got stomachache because I laughed a lot). So, I didn't feel bored when I was reading it. You can say that this book is fast-paced because it consists of short stories, but I prefer slow reading it because it's hilariously brilliant! I didn't intend to rush the things and it didn't feel like an old myth at all. Neil Gaiman writing is flowing beautifully like a river and so refreshing. The last story of this book is painfully beautiful. I recommended this for those who love reading Norse Mythology or any mythologies.

well written
By: Rohmat

I love mythology and love it more when it's rewritten by one of the best story tellers, Neil Gaiman. He makes it easier and more interesting to read.
