The Best from Shafak So Far
By: Neil Amelina

Shafak's The Island of Missing Trees is about a forbidden love story that took place in Nicosia, Cyprus and London, England between Costas a male Greek Cypriot and and Dafne a Turkish Cypriot lady. Their love story began from th year 1974 in the midst of civil war. The Island of Missing Trees involves a role of a fig tree as the witness and story teller of their love. Costa's and Dafne's love had lasted until the passing of Defne in the year 2000s. They are blessed with a daughter named Ada Kazantzakis who were born decades later in London England. The Island of Missing Trees is very beautifully written. The Island of Missing Trees even enriches knowledge of the readers... See More

especially about the conflict that had occured in Cyprus in 70s and also botanical related knowledge since the fig tree or Ficus carica became a strong supporting character of this novel. The Island of Missing Trees has demonstratated the broad knowledge that is mastered by Elif Shafak. I have read other novels by Shafak such as Forty Rules of Love, Honor and Three Daughter of Eve. However, The Island of Missing Trees is the best so far.
