This novel is written as a little girl’s perspective during the cultural revolution. It was interesting to read a vaguely autobiographical account of the Cultural Revolution in China as youth literature.
It is written for young adult. Yet this painful read about the realities of China's violent Cultural Revolution, Maoist fanaticism, and the struggle of survival can certainly still be understood by adults, particularly considering the historic impact of the Chinese Revolution. And the ending is, thankfully, neatly wrapped up and doesn’t have another sequel coming up.
