I generally enjoy science fiction but this goes beyond the genre. I had first read the Southern Reach Trilogy and while I loved Annihilation, Authority was slow going and Acceptance didn’t provide answers to all the questions raised in the first two books.
But now VanderMeer weaves together some gripping yet subtle post apocalyptic sci-fi. I chose this book immediately after reading the Southern Reach Trilogy and I'm now reading the accompanying novella. The story lent enough to my imagination to keep me obsessing about it all day until I could sit down and read it. Borne is the most interesting fictional character I've read in a long time.
