BASIC BLACK : 26 Edgy Essentials For The Modern Wardrobe by Sato Watanabe. With patterns, instructions, and diagrams translated to English. I am liking this one readers! There are cute, fitted, and very wearable styles. YAY!!! Now fitted isn’t something I normally associate with Japanese Pattern Books so let’s just say I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened this book, thinking it was going to be the typical potato sack/jumper/ smock type stuff from some of the other books I’ve looked at and sewed from. No. Not at all. There are several things I can’t wait to sew for Fall.
Basic Black is a book of sewing patterns by a Japanese designer Sato Watanabe. This is one of the more interesting and exciting Japanese Pattern Books that I have used, particularly because it includes patterns for garments that are designed with shape, rather than the usual loose fitting Japanese styles. [...] This book is beautifully presented and has an excellent selection of diverse patterns for coats, dresses, skirts and tops in loose, semi-structured and fitted styles. It took me ages to decide on a pattern to sew because there are more that I want to make, including a zip-up jacket, two dresses and a shirt.
Sato also has another popular Japanese sewing book newly released in English! Basic Black: 26 Edgy Essentials for the Modern Wardrobe includes a full wardrobe of Western-sized, basic garment designs with pattern pieces. We especially like the Tunic Blouse with Lace Trimmed Armholes, V-neck Midi Dress and Dress with Stitched Skirt.
Let’s face it black is a staple in every wardrobe. It’s slimming. It’s classic. It goes with just about anything. The latest Japanese sewing book, Basic Black by Sato Watanabe, released by Tuttle publishing celebrates all things black. Of course, you could make any one of the 26 patterns included in any color you’d like, but I love the variety of patterns and textures the book features while sticking to the basic black.
