War from the point of view of a naïve young man. The youth who initially thought that going to war showed patriotism and courage. However, the reality he faced was not like that. During the war there was indeed courage, patriotism, brotherhood, but there was also cowardice, confusions, lost of aim, a desire to be praised, a personal obsession to get awards by sacrificing friends and subordinates on the battlefield. Although Stephen Crane himself never went to war because he was born after the American Civil War was over, this story is allegedly inspired by Stephen Crane's interviews with war veterans.
