Description

One of Studio Ghibli's most beloved classics, Totoro celebrates its 25th anniversary!

The beloved animation classic by legendary Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki, My Neighbor Totoro, is now a novel. This edition features original illustrations by Miyazaki himself, accompanying a story by veteran children's author Tsugiko Kubo.

Eleven-year-old Satsuki and her sassy little sister Mei have moved to the country to be closer to their ailing mother. Soon, in the woods behind their spooky old house, Satsuki and Mei discover a forest spirit named Totoro. When Mei goes missing, it's up to Satsuki to find her sister, and she'll need help from some new, and magical, friends.

A book for those who have and haven't watched the movie
By: Rabin Gosal

If you’ve watched the anime, this novel adaptation will certainly add more to your imagination. Many scenes that are not in the movie are written here. There are more characters and more background is shed on the existing characters. In some ways, I think the book is packed with more emotion than the movie, but for some reason the author has made some of the scenes shorter. Several times during reading the book I found myself thinking, “Is that it? I thought there’ll be more…”

If you haven’t watched the anime, this is great way to start and become interested. The highly descriptive language used by the writer puts the legendary visuals... See More

of Hayao Miyazaki’s movie into equally rich words. The few simple yet beautiful pencil and watercolor drawings by Miyazaki in this book will also make you want to watch the movie.

All in all, this is a delightful book to read. The English is very easy for children to read and understand, and the writing style makes its very suitable for parents to read with their children. Lots of room for improvisation and sound effects.
