Description

It's time for Revenge.

Benjamin Martin, author of the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award semi-finalist Samurai Awakening, returns with another masterpiece of young adult fiction and the next installment in his riveting shapeshifter saga.

American teenager David Matthews has more to deal with than the average exchange student living in Japan--a lot more. In Samurai Awakening, David woke one morning to discover that he'd been empowered and possessed by the tiger god Kou. Now a Jitsugen Samurai in Revenge of the Akuma Clan and able to take on Kou's form, David must use his new abilities to protect Japan from the terrifying evil creeping across the land--and waiting for him to fail.

As his relationships, especially with Rie his host sister, grow uncertain, he must forge deeper connections with Kou, the tiger god that resides with him, and form new alliances if he hopes to hold back the return of Japan's ancient enemies. It is up to David to stop the powerful and vengeful Akuma Clan--and time is running out.

In the wake of Twilight, the young adult fantasy genre has become bloated with vampires, werewolves and other somewhat stereotypical fantasy creatures. Revenge of the Akuma Clan provides a refreshing escape from this pattern by merging martial arts, sword-smithing, shape shifters and legendary foes. The main character maintains a close relationship with a Shinto tiger god, which makes for some witty dialogue and a unique twist to the genre.

Revenge of the Akuma Clan provides a fine thriller revolving around mythical Japanese monsters and warriors, and tells of American teen David, an exchange student living in Japan. In the prior Samurai Awakening he discovered he'd been possessed by a tiger god: now a Jitsugen Samurai in Revenge of the Akuma Clan, David is charged with protecting Japan from a horrible evil. A powerful protagonist who is also a tiger god, a female warrior, and more creates strong connections between Japanese culture, martial arts and fantasy and is a fine pick for any young adult reader; especially those who enjoyed Samurai Awakening.

I highly recommend this book as a Christmas gift for any YA fiction fanatic in your life—whatever age they might be. For fans of Japanese history, adventure, and action, this book is a sure fit. I'm glad I got the chance to read it, and I hope to see more of David Matthews and the characters around him.

This sequel to Samurai Awakening (Tuttle, 2012) continues the story of an American exchange student turned mystical warrior with the power to save Japan. The villains from book one are back, and as the title implies, they’re seeking vengeance; it’s... See More

up to David and his friends to save the day again. Japanese dialogue is interspersed throughout broadens and deepens the realistic depiction of Japanese school life and culture. Though the pace is leisurely at first, it leads to an action-packed conclusion that paves the way for a third book.

A thrilling book that I read in one sitting! Revenge of the Akuma Clan has all my favorite elements! Fantastic mythical Japanese creatures, kick-ass action sequences, scary evil monsters, a strong female warrior, a sympathetic and likeable protagonist, and a tiger god!
