Description

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut--part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by "Blade Runner," and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

It's the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.

And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune--and remarkable power--to whoever can unlock them.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday's riddles are based in the pop culture he loved--that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday's icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes's oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.

And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.

Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt--among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to" win." But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life--and love--in the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

A world at stake.

A quest for the ultimate prize.

Ultimate nerd fantasy
By: Stephanie Buntoro

Dystopian YA is one of my favourite genres but most books I read in the last couple of years failed to induce me to give 5-star (I had plenty of 4-stars)...until Ready Player One. I wouldn't say that I'm nerdy or geeky whatsoever and there was a lot of references I didn't get (at least until I googled them), but it definitely didn't stop me from extremely enjoying the book. Superb world building, likeable characters, crazy actions, endless pop-culture easter eggs, and compelling human interactions. I haven't had so much fun with a book in a long time. The only downfall? Cline has confirmed he's writing a sequel...I don't think it can beat this one so will just hope it'll be as enjoyable.

I read the book after watching the movie twice. The story was different yet it still fun to read and really entertaining. I really recommend it if you loved the movie!

Penasaran dengan cerita bukunya. Menurut kabar agak berbeda dengan filmnya. Ternyata memang rada beda tapi bukunya lebih seru, pemahaman latar belakang cerita juga lebih dalam.

I feel old, already.
By: Ulil Amri

The book has a quite simple storyline but the refferences are dope. It took me back to the days when I was a little boy and enjoying some western pop-culture from my parents' era simply because they liked them and we, the kids, had no choice.

The settings are incredible. Dystopian era is one of my favorites and to mix them with the pop-culture from 80 something is literally GENIUS. It's like having a reunion with the old folks and listen to their POV and to hear them saying, "back in my days..." and we're like, "That sounds amazing and rough."

Yet, I still find difficulty to understand some words at the beginning but the refferences on the later parts helped me out.

Such an incredible piece of art.

Ready Player One!

The fact that this book has a lot of 80s references, it makes me so excited. You know, I'm an old lady inside and I just love 80-ish and 90-ish vibes (mostly the music). I found that some scenes are terrifyingly realistic, it makes it more exciting. If you're a low-key or high-key fan of video games or anything that came from the eighties, I highly recommended it! This book is well written too, makes it become a page turning book. But then again some of the scenes don't need a long explanation, it just makes the story more dragging. Overall, this book is worth the read!
