First American Publication

This stunning and elegiac novel by the author of the internationally acclaimed Wind-Up Bird Chronicle has sold over 4 million copies in Japan and is now available to American audiences for the first time.  It is sure to be a literary event.

Toru, a quiet and preternaturally serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before.  Toru begins to adapt to campus life and the loneliness and isolation he faces there, but Naoko finds the pressures and responsibilities of life unbearable.  As she retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself reaching out to others and drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman.

A poignant story of one college student's romantic coming-of-age, Norwegian Wood takes us to that distant place of a young man's first, hopeless, and heroic love.

What A Book
By: Ika Susilowatie

I forgot when I first read this book, but last year, I decided to reread it. And oh boy, did it still hurt. First of all, it's Murakami. Second of all, it's Norwegian Wood. Picking up this book to read sent me chills as if I was invited to those forests in Norway, all covered in white and cold. I have always associated Norway with something lonely and when I read this book, that's what I felt. Lonely and lonely and lonely. Not that I am complaining though. There is something in those flowing words that make me feel like life is just like this and no matter how many people that come to our lives, we will always be alone in the end. Somehow, I feel like I live as the... See More

character; that's all thanks to the power of Murakami's narration. This is the kind of book that I'd go to when I need to be sad, because too much happiness isn't always good. I think more and more people should give it a try.

Awesome book!
By: Winoko Christofel

This is the first Haruki Murakami novel that I read and I really surprised how much I love it. His writing style is a bit unusual, weird even. But at the same time, he can write such a mundane event/things in such an interesting way. I love how he describe the things and even, it feels like dreaming with your eyes open. After reading this one book in particular, I bought way so many books that he had written and I love each book. This one book is a great place to start.
